Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, contingency, geopolitical, operational, credit, pension, insurance, financial crime and regulatory compliance, market and reputation risks. All parts of the Global Risk team use their skills, insight and integrity to handle established threats and those they see emerging, acting to protect and enable HSBC to deliver sustainable growth.

Role Purpose:

In this role, you will:

  • In conjunction with the business line seek to identify customers showing first signs of distress so early action can be taken to minimise loss.
  • Ensure HRPE accounts under SCU management responsibility are pro-actively managed, appropriate professional support obtained, reasons for distress and potential solutions quickly identified, strategy/action plans to minimise loss/maximize recoveries/optimise income/protect Bank’s reputation created and vigorously implemented.
  • Ensure that post business insolvency direct/third party recoveries maximized.
  • Ensure Equity interests arising from distressed restructurings are effectively managed to maximise recoveries in the medium term.
  • Ensure that SCU follow the Bank’s “Conduct” agenda always seeking to treat customers fairly.

Key Accountabilities:

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Work in partnership with MENAT GB, CMB, MME, Business Banking, and Private Banking businesses to minimize loss
  • Team to adopt HSBC conduct agenda
  • Executive local, Regional and Global management aware of potential and actual risks
  • Reputational risk always consciously considered

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Demonstrate and promote HSBC values
  • Build a coordinated best in class MENAT Special Credit Unit Capability.
  • Encourage proactive people management including development plans and ensuring that levels of resources are appropriate
  • Snapshot surveys demonstrate progression

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Review operations and engage positively in transformation programmes to optimize risk management and customer focus whilst seeking to facilitate streamlining and sustainable headcount saves.
  • Operate in accordance with FIM’s, SCU Global Operating Guidelines BIM’s, and Compliance policy.
  • Ensure SCU comply with “Conduct” agenda treating customers fairly and ensure positive conduct outcomes


To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree is mandatory
  • Extensive experience in work-out /managing distressed assets and loan recovery situations
  • Prior banking experience working in the Middle East
  • Experience of leading and driving performance through a team of mixed grades and capabilities
  • Excellent communicator, with the ability to build positive relationships with senior stakeholders and customers.
  • Comfortable working in a matrix environment
  • A strong advocate of good conduct and culture
